Paranormal Glossary

Agent- A person a haunting seems to be centered on.

Anomaly (Anomalies)- Something found that has no explainable source; strange unrecognizable shapes appearing in photographs taken at haunted sites and cemeteries.

Apparition- A disembodied spirit that shows itself partially or fully to the human.

Apport- A solid object that seemingly appears out of nowhere, believed to be teleported from another dimension.

Astral body- The part of an individual that is the life force, the essence of the soul of a person.

Astral projection- Leaving one’s body, the ability to project oneself outside the physical body.

Avatars- A bodily manifestation of a highly evolved spiritual being; usually implying a deliberate descent into lower realms of existence of a specific purpose.

Benevolent- Helpful, loving intentions, passive.

Bi-location- The uncommon phenomenon of a person or object appearing in two distant places simultaneously.

Clairaudient- Psychic that have the still to hear voices or sounds that others are not able to hear with their own ears.

Clairsentience- Being able to feel things, that normally other people can not.

Cold spot- An area of the electromagnetic energy field that can be stationary or free-floating.

Deja vu- A strange feeling that one has visited a place before or has experienced some type of activity at an earlier time.

Demon- An inhuman or evil spirit; a low-level negative energy that interacts with evil.

Discarnate- Existing without a physical body; spirits that are free of the body‘s restrictions.

Doppelganger- Ghosts of living people that are the exact duplicates; a projected as OBE (out-of-body experience), either consciously or unconsciously.

Ecto-Mist- The second stage of a ghostly manifestation; a mist or fog; spirit manifesting as mist.

Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP)- Voices captured on digital recorders when no one is present; voices of spirits who are attempting to communicate with living persons; describes noises and voices recorded on traditional audio or videotape that are often heard during playback.

EMF detector- An instrument that measure electromagnetic fields (also known as a Gauss meter).

Energy- A force; the essence of all creation; vibrational frequencies of creative power.

Entity- Any being or beings with life force of some type, including spirits and ghosts.

Exorcism- The expulsion of demons or spirits from a person or place.

Gauss meter- An instrument that measures electromagnetic fields.

Geomagnetic fields- The magnetic field around the earth; changes in this field are said to influence spirit activity.

Ghost- A deceased person or image appearing to the living.

Ghost hunter- Someone who looks for and document what they believe to be ghosts or paranormal activity related to ghosts.

Globule- (Know as orbs) A small sphere of electromagnetic energy, in which the spirit usually appears on film as globules.

Hallucination- A type of sensory experience that does not correspond to physical reality.

Haunted- Refers to a person or place to which spirits may be attached to and associated with unexplainable phenomena.

Haunting- Refers to an entity that is heard, seen, and felt; associated with unexplainable phenomena.

Imprint- Energy that is encased either temporarily or permanently in a dimensional frequency; energy deposit created by extreme trauma or repetitive actions over periods of time.

Intelligent haunting- Ghosts that are capable of intelligent interaction; communication with ghosts.

Investigation- The act of documentation and researching a location that has had a history of paranormal activity.

Malevolent- Harmful, angry, destructive, frightening behavior.

Manifestation- The appearance of a ghost taking form; the manner in which ghosts and spirits present themselves to us.

Medium- A psychic through whom spirits can communicate.

Omen- A sign of things to come; to portent of the future.

Orb- A sphere of electromagnetic energy produced by spirit; actual embodiment of spirit in varying sizes; representing spirit.

Out-of-body experience (OBE)- Experience of leaving your body for a period of time.

Paranormal- Occurrences that take place outside the natural order of things; ghosts, UFOs, ESP; difficult to explain; beyond the normal, yet in the realm of the natural.

Paranormal researcher- One who researches that which is beyond simple human experiences or scientific explanations.

Precognition- Seeing or knowing what will occur in the future.

Psychic- Someone who uses various forms of clairvoyance or empathic feelings to tap into nonphysical realities; someone who is sensitive to the spiritual world.

Psychokinesis- The ability to move objects using one’s mind.

Residual ghost- A term used to describe a spirit’s energy that is trapped in a continuous time loop and reenacts certain events repeatedly.

Seance- A gathering of individuals, usually presided over by a medium, for the purpose of receiving spirit communication with the dead or paranormal manifestations.

Sensitive- A person with psychic and empathic abilities.

Shadow ghost- A black form with no discernible features that often appears in photographs as if caught unawares.

Sixth sense (ESP)- The acquisition of information by means beyond the five human senses.

Spirit guide- A spirit who desires to help and guide its soul connections in the physical realm.

Synchronicity- The interconnectedness of coincidences and their hidden meanings.

Telepathy- Commonly known as an awareness of information or emotions that exist in the mind of another person; soul-to-soul communication; communication using the mind as opposed to the senses.

Vortex- A funnel of energy used by ghosts as a conveyance in which to move about easily while at the same time maintaining their energy fields.

White noise- Buzzing sound formed by a combination of audible frequencies, often used as background noise for EVP recordings.
